AYSO plays in ALL weather, cold, rain and snow included. The exceptions are the presence of thunder and / OR lightning or field flooding. So please remember to dress for the weather.
Thunder / Lightning - Games Halted or Canceled
By DeKalb Park District and AYSO rules, if thunder or lightning are observed, ALL play - during game or practice - is to stop for thirty (30) minutes after the last thunder / lightning are observed.
- If new thunder or lightning are observed, the countdown starts over at thirty (30) minutes.
- Any games will be delayed or canceled.
- Families should wait in their vehicles NOT in the shelterhouse during heavy storms.
- If weather appears to be subsiding,
- Games - The Regional Commissioner will signal the all clear and game play will resume.
- Practices - The coach will determine if and when play can resume for their respective practices.
- Make-up of canceled games is at the discretion of the affected coaches/teams.
Cold / Rain / Snow / Frost - Games Will Be Played
Late season games especially bring frost, sleet, freezing rain and even snow along with their frigid temperatures at early morning games. Games will still be played. (Practices may be canceled at the discretion of the coaches.)
- Consider bringing blankets, hats, gloves.
- Consider purchasing sets of inexpensive, disposable pocket hand warmers from any of the local department stores (generally found on endcaps or in sporting goods) for use inside gloves and cleats/shoes (and not just for players).
- Remember that the uniform jersey needs to be the last thing that a player puts on and any garments underneath it should be free from drawstrings, hard plastic or hard zippers.
- Remember that players will be very warm after running around the field after the ball, and that when coming off the field, they should add an additional layer (blanket, jacket, etc.) to prevent any chill that might overtake them.
- Remember that the ball will hurt more when it is cold outside.
- Players are allowed to wear black sweatpants in lieu of uniform pants. Consider wearing the sweatpants OVER the shorts in case the player / weather gets too warm mid-game, especially if you are sitting for multiple games in one day. Then they can easily be removed.
- Watch for signs of frostbite. Consider bringing a spare change of clothes for your player(s) if you are going out after a game / practice played in inclement weather.
Questions
When there's question, please check the Home Page of this website and / or Facebook (Facebook.com/DeKalbAYSO) & Twitter (@DeKalbAYSO) for updated information. Both link to the home page of this website if you don't have access. Always use your best judgment and please dress your children especially appropriately. That sounds like common sense, but there have been small kids dropped at the fields in their jersey and shorts with frost on the ground. Thanks!!
If you have further questions, please contact the DeKalb AYSO Regional Commissioner.
